Dreams and nightmares can be quite dangerous if not kept in check. They serve a purpose as I do, and it would be unfair to have them overstep and infringe upon rather than help a dreamer.

Do you believe having grown up in a protective role influenced your later path? Of being a vigilante.

What exactly goes into making a dream or a nightmare? Do you spend a lot of time tweaking them until they are just right?

Yes, I think so. I think between growing up in a protective role as well as seeing some of the flaws in the legal system in regards to abuse and death has made me want to try and help others past those things.

Oh yes, they take time to craft. Dreams and nightmares are built based on the needs of dreamers. As they change, so too must what the Dreaming contain. Which isn't to say that some dreams might not end up in more than one dream - many have delighted in those flying fish, for instance. It's more that some dreams and nightmares get retired and new ones take their place, and ones that have been retired might return or be amended. It's an ever-ongoing process.

I thought as much, though I didn't want to assume. Not that I've experienced a good deal of your world's legal system.

[She smiles to herself when he mentions the rainbow flying fish.] Those little fish have made their way into a few of my dreams recently by the way, and they're just as pretty as they were when we went for our walk together.

It's an imperfect system but I try to do what I can to make sure people who can't or usually don't get justice, do.

I haven't swam with them, but one does seem to like following me when I'm in that part of the Dreaming. Quite the curious little one, with a touch more silver on it? It may have reminded me of you.

A society without any sense of rules would not function, though not all care about the justice element as you do. Do you often follow up with those you help after?

Wait, really? Awww that's really cute that it follows you around and I'm touched that it reminds you of me.

I do so more now that I'm working solo, before when I was a Titan that was usually something Dick or Gar did.

All it need do now is find trouble and the resemblance will be uncanny. [He's teasing.]

May I inquire how you go about it? I'm... trying to follow up better with people during their waking hours. I know it is not the same, but people often bring and find resolutions to their problems in dreams.

Okay, yes. Guilty as charged.

You will probably have an easier time than I do but usually when I follow up with people I do so by creeping around on rooftops to watch them and see if they seem happier. I also do a lot of back door computer investigating to make sure that certain arrests and court cases go through like they should and that nothing is being swept under the rug.

No, it's true that locating them physically is not a problem for me. It was more the interaction that came after, if there was any beyond watching.

No, usually I don't interact with them beyond watching since I have to try and keep my real identity a secret.

I had suspected as much, but I appreciate the confirmation. I hope more of them than not have managed to make a better life for themselves.

[Ruefully] Oh, don't give me much credit yet. Doing so on a wider scale is a relatively new tactic I'm employing.

I suppose I put more weight on myself for results than mere intentions.

Maybe that's because results can be measured and conclusions can be drawn?

Most likely. Functionality and efficiency are if not intrinsic then at least highly valued. [He doesn't really care about the effort he puts into what he does, he always puts his whole heart into his purpose and would be baffled at the thought of reward or encouragement for it. Having improved results however and a well-run realm as the effect of his efforts he does take satisfaction in seeing.]

Has anyone ever called you a 'workaholic', Dream?

To my face or behind my back? [The answer to both is yes.]

In my defense, it is why I exist. I think it would be worse to feel I knew not my purpose.

Oh I'm about 100% sure you've been called that behind your back so I was more curious if someone has said it to your face.

And yes, I realize that it is why you exist I guess I just like the idea of you also finding at least a little bit of time to do things that you enjoy and bring you happiness.

Oh, yes. More those whom I have a personal history with, rather than those who serve the Dreaming. [Long way of saying his few exes and friends.]

I suppose it only partially counts, but I do appreciate a good story that inspires. Book, play, never published but only thought upon... it doesn't matter the format.

Wait, so you can read those? Stories that aren't written down and just dreamt about?

... some would qualify as such.

Oh yes. Every story that was conceived, whether put down on paper or not, can be found within the Dreaming's library.

That is so fascinating. Do you ever re-read any of them?

I'm uncertain what good might come from such an endeavor.

Not terribly many to be honest. I have a good memory for stories. I have seen some plays performed multiple times, though. The adaptations differ.
