Why is that sketchy? The private room is so that the animals don't get over stimulated by the noise in the waiting room. Plus there's things in the room to help check it out, like a scale and thermometers and things like that.

Not all doctors are shady, and I think I found a good place we can take the kitten to. It's got good reviews and they're open 24 hours so that will suit our bizarre "work" hours.
